The Importance of Electromechanical Sensors

The Importance of Electromechanical Sensors

The so-called electromechanical sensors are devices composed of electrical and mechanical components, interacting and transmitting information or commands to other components of a system. Pressure switches, flow switches, vacuum switches are examples of sensors that integrate mechanical and electrical components in the reading and transmission and a command or information to the system.

The development of semiconductors leveraged the industry as a whole, and electromechanical sensors also benefited from it. The miniaturization of processing components has considerably reduced the size of the electrical components, enabling the development of units that integrate the mechanical and electrical components into a single component, contributing to the maintenance and engineering processes.

The development of computing and electronic processes replaced many analog systems and practices used at the beginning of global industrialization and used until 30 or 40 years ago. However, some processes require procedures that necessarily involve the presence of mechanical components. An example of this is the spring used to measure pressure in a flow switch. Although the interpretation of this pressure is made by electronic components, the reading is performed by a mechanical system.

Some tests are carried out in order to transform all procedures into electronics, but the electromechanical components are still essential for most of our industrial processes.
